Can You Use a Candle Warmer as a Lamp? (Yes, With a Few Catches)

Can You Use a Candle Warmer as a Lamp? (Yes, With a Few Catches)

Quick answer: Yes. A candle warmer lamp is a working lamp, and you can switch it on without a candle for accent or mood lighting. But most use a downward-facing halogen bulb that runs hot. Treat it as ambient or accent light rather than your main reading light, keep the base clear, and don't leave it on unattended.

You bought the candle warmer for the scent. Then one evening the candle's used up, the lamp is sitting there on the nightstand, and you wonder: can I just switch it on as a light?

You can. It's worth knowing what kind of light it gives, and the few things it isn't designed for.

Quick guide: what a candle warmer lamp is good for

Use Works? What to know
Accent or mood lighting Yes It's what it does best, especially with a dimmer
Without a candle underneath Yes Keep the base clear: the bulb still heats whatever is below it
Bedside or night light Yes, dimmed A focused, warm pool of light; switch it off or use a timer before you sleep
Reading lamp Partly The beam points down, so it lights a small area. A regular LED lamp does this better
Main room light No Too focused and too hot for general lighting
With a lit candle underneath Never Don't burn the candle while the warmer is on

How does a candle warmer lamp work?

A candle warmer lamp is a small lamp aimed straight down at a candle. Instead of burning the wick, it uses the heat of the bulb to melt the top layer of wax, which releases the fragrance. That's why most candle warmers use halogen bulbs: they give off enough heat to melt wax, as well as light (NBC Select). Most use a 35W bulb, though some are rated for 50W or 75W. The lamp's label tells you which.

So when you use it as a lamp, you're switching on a hot, focused spotlight. That's fine, as long as you treat it like one.

Can you use a candle warmer lamp without a candle?

Yes. The lamp doesn't need a candle to work. Two things to keep in mind:

  1. The bulb still heats whatever is underneath. Leave the base empty or put something heat-safe there. Don't set paper, fabric, plastic or electronics under the shade.
  2. Parts get hot. The bulb, the shade and the area under it can all get hot, and glass shades can get very hot (NBC Select). Let it cool before touching or moving it.

Is a candle warmer safer than a lit candle?

Generally, yes, because there's no open flame. Candles start an average of 20 home fires a day in the US, and 37% of home candle fires start in bedrooms, according to National Fire Protection Association data for 2015–2019 (Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal). An FDNY fire official told NBC Select that a candle warmer is "not as much of a risk as a lit candle that can be knocked down."

"Safer" isn't the same as "set and forget." It's still a hot appliance:

  • Never light the candle while it's under the warmer.
  • Switch it off when you leave the room or go to sleep. If your lamp has no built-in timer, a plug-in outlet timer does the job.
  • Keep it away from curtains, bedding and anything that can fall onto it.
  • Use only the bulb type and wattage your lamp specifies. A higher-wattage bulb melts wax faster but runs hotter than the lamp was designed for. See our GY6.35 wax warmer bulb guide for how to match a replacement.

5 ways to use a candle warmer lamp at home

  1. Mood lighting. A dimmed candle warmer gives a warm, focused glow that suits a living room corner or a dinner table.
  2. Bedside light. Turned down low, it's a soft light for winding down. Switch it off before you fall asleep.
  3. Scent without a flame. Its main job: melting scented candles to fill a room with fragrance, with no open flame for kids or pets to knock over.
  4. Desk or shelf accent. A small pool of light on a desk, bookshelf or entryway table.
  5. Decor. With a wood, marble or metal base, it's a decorative piece even when it's switched off.

Need a replacement candle warmer bulb?

When the bulb burns out, the lamp stops melting wax and stops working as a light. Check the old bulb or the lamp's label for three things: the base (commonly GU10 or GY6.35), the voltage (usually 120V) and the maximum wattage.

Not sure which base you have? Our GY6.35 wax warmer bulb guide walks through how to identify and match it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a candle warmer lamp without a candle?

Yes. It works as a regular accent lamp. Keep the base clear of anything heat-sensitive, because the bulb still heats whatever is underneath.

Can a candle warmer lamp be used as a reading lamp?

It can, but it isn't ideal. The light points straight down and lights a small area, and the halogen bulb runs hot. A regular LED reading lamp gives wider, cooler light.

Do you light the candle when using a candle warmer?

No. A candle warmer replaces the flame. Never burn the candle while it's under the warmer.

Is it safe to leave a candle warmer lamp on all night?

It's not a good idea. Switch it off before you go to sleep or leave the room, or plug it into an outlet timer if it doesn't have one built in.

Can I use an LED bulb in a candle warmer?

It may light up, but an LED produces far less heat, so it usually won't melt the wax. Use the halogen bulb type and wattage specified for your lamp.

This guide is general information. Always follow your candle warmer's instructions, use only the bulb type and wattage it specifies, and never leave a hot appliance unattended.
